The President’s wife has a premonition, setting in motion a transatlantic story of love, sex and betrayal.
Set against a backdrop of drug dealing, covert political manipulation and murder the Muffin Man is an authentic and atmospheric tale from the 1970s. Based on real events, the story begins with a premonition that leads to the formation of a secretive political organization. The plot unfolds in twists and turns through the ordinary lives of innocents who are sucked into an accelerating and dangerous vortex of drug dealing, assassination and murder.
A former high-flying US Army Colonel, his alienated daughter, an accidental drug dealer, his beautiful but manipulative girlfriend and a corrupt police inspector all become sucked into the secretive organization, initiating a succession of assassinations. Rewards lead to arrogance and an early death, or do they?
The muffin man goes back and forth between two groups of people. Ed a former military officer suffering from PTSD after Vietnam has trouble reintegrating into society and home life after giving up his military career. Disassociating himself from friends and relatives Ed begins to organize a group of anti government rebels to destabilize the current government. David and Louise were just occasional drug users, not wanting to be involved in the seeder side associated with drugs, until a friend leaves his stash and goes on the run from police. They begin dealing drugs with the help of a local police inspector in which Louise is having an affair with as well as David.
Confused? I was too for half this book, I kept trying to figure out how these two groups of people were connected and why, and it was driving me crazy. So when finally it all started to come together and make sense I started to enjoy the book for what it really was. A great political thriller. I have to admit I enjoyed the story lines of David and Louise; I found them a lot more interesting than Ed and his demons. There was more substance to their lives and their interactions with other people that helped you develop a better attachment to them from the beginning.
The story lines were great and once everything fell into place and all the dots connected it really kept me interested. I was pleasantly surprised with the ending, normally I like everything wrapped up and finished off with a neat and tidy bow. The author has left this ending a little open, your not really sure if David gets the girl in the end or if Louise finally met her match. Which makes me wonder if there will be a sequel?
