True love can last an eternity . . . but immortality comes at a price. . . . On the midnight shift at a hospital in rural Maine, Dr. Luke Findley is expecting another quiet evening of frostbite and the occasional domestic dispute. But the minute Lanore McIlvrae—Lanny—walks into his ER, she changes his life forever. A mysterious woman with a past and plenty of dark secrets, Lanny is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. He is inexplicably drawn to her . . . despite the fact that she is a murder suspect with a police escort. And as she begins to tell her story, a story of enduring love and consummate betrayal that transcends time and mortality, Luke finds himself utterly captivated.
Her impassioned account begins at the turn of the nineteenth century in the same small town of St. Andrew, Maine, back when it was a Puritan settlement. Consumed as a child by her love for the son of the town’s founder, Lanny will do anything to be with him forever. But the price she pays is steep—an immortal bond that chains her to a terrible fate for all eternity. And now, two centuries later, the key to her healing and her salvation lies with Dr. Luke Findley.
Wow wow wow I don’t even know where to begin. First of all I have to say I really enjoyed Katsu’s writing style, I really liked the flow of the first person narrative while Lanny is telling Luke her story. The story transitions well when it goes back to present day, to Lanny’s story and back again. The love story my gosh talk about the heart wants what the heart wants. Loving a man through centuries, who is not capable of loving you back in the same way, would be soul crushing. It’s not even that Jonathan doesn’t love her because in his own weird way he does. He craves her company, they are best friends, but he just doesn’t have the capabilities to love anyone with everything he has. There were times while I was reading this book that I wanted to shake Lanny and scream “he’s just not that into you! Move on Geez!” My frustration with her inability to get over him was palpable to everyone in the room. This book is perfectly set up as a series. Adair is too wicked to just have his disappear and not have him come back wrecking havoc. I would also love to know what happen to his other minions. I am really looking forward to reading the next in the series the reckoning as well as the novella ( I will have to run to Coles this weekend )
I gave this book a 4 out of 5 star rating.
